Wooden Boat Enamel

Enamel is next on the list (not acrylic enamel) and is an alkyd based (oil) paint. the better manufactures do produce better paints here and as a general rule you do get what you're paying for. so, if you go cheap here you'll be recoating sooner.. On wooden boats it is best to stick to the traditional type of oil based finishes, two part paints are not only expensive but also tend to be less flexible. because wooden boats flex and work, especially along the seams the expensive finishes will not last any longer than the traditional types.. However, whatever you use on wood must allow it to “breathe”, to absorb and emit moisture as conditions change. in many types of traditional boat construction, allowing the wood to breathe is important. oil based marine enamels are the prime choice for wooden boats, at least that is my opinion..

I just don't understand these us paint terms. what is a 'latex enamel'? i'm about to use anvil's gorilla grip anti-skid (someone's anti-skid request for their boat) which is to be applied over a well keyed 'latex enamel'.. Epifanes yacht enamel is a classic, ultra high gloss yacht enamel for interior and exterior. arguably the best single pack gloss paint available. suitable for wood, steel, fibreglass and aluminium above the waterline in conjunction with an appropriate epifanes undercoat and primer.. The one part paints are all mostly alkyd enamel with various amounts of polyurethane added. they are not true polys. also the wooden boat mag forum guys seem to like the kirby paint. made for boats. i have not used it. some guys like and use plain old house paint on their boats..
